Data centers get headlines for how much electricity they consume. The number that rarely makes the news is how fast they're getting more efficient.

According to the International Energy Agency, the energy required to perform a single AI task is falling at a rate the agency describes as unprecedented in energy history. Hardware keeps getting faster per watt, models keep getting leaner, and the facilities housing them keep getting smarter. For perspective, the IEA estimates data centers accounted for roughly 1.5% of global electricity use in 2024 meaningful, but a long way from the runaway picture often painted.

A big part of that efficiency story is cooling and operations. Operators like Equinix, Digital Realty, and NTT are using AI itself to optimize cooling in real time tuning systems to ambient conditions and shifting loads to cut energy waste. The IEA's efficiency analysis points to digital optimization as one of the most accessible near-term levers available to any facility.

The takeaway for responsible development is simple: a modern data center designed around efficiency from day one does far more computing per unit of energy than the facilities people picture when they imagine the industry. Efficiency isn't a footnote — it's the fastest-moving part of the field.
